The Teahouse serves an extensive range of delicious and fragrant, fine, whole leaf White, Green and Jasmine Chinese teas.
Further to these, with the aide of expert brewer and founder of the Canton Tea Co Jennifer Wood, we hand-pick a monthly guest tea which we invite you to sample.
For the month of September we have chosen to celebrate a Tie Guan Yin or Iron Buddha.
Also known as Iron Goddess of Mercy, Tie Guan Yin is grown in the lush, humid tea terroir of Anxi county, Fujian province and is one of China’s most famous and popular oolong teas. The lightly roasted, dark leaves are rolled and twisted into small fists which release bright fruity notes followed by a soft, sweet finish.
Tie Guan Yin was an oolong that was imported to Europe at huge expense in the late 17th century, so could well have been what Catherine de Braganza sipped with her friend the Duchess of Lauderdale next door at Ham House.
Oolong teas attract extravagant health claims for weight loss and improving the heart, skin and teeth. There is evidence that it can reduce cholesterol but Canton Tea focuses on the provenance and taste of the teas – and the health benefits are simply a bonus.
Do ask for a taster, and let us know what you think. You can also email your thoughts to charlotte@petershamnurseries.com.
